Paying respects to fallen heroes in Taiping

 
IN MEMORY: New Zealand Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright placing a cross on the grave of Royal New Zealand Air Force pilot officer J.G.Lomax who died during the Second World War.

Lomax, 29, was among 867 soldiers who died while defending the country and buried at the Taiping War Cemetery.

The Governor-General, accompanied by her husband Peter Cartwright, were met on arrival by Larut Matang and Selama district officer Mahmod Morsidi and local VIPs recently.

A five-member team of bag-pipers and buglars led by 9th Royal Regiment Ranger acting commanding officer Mejar Zainudin Mustafa accompanied the VIPs to a tomb where Cartwright laid a wreath as a mark of respect for the fallen heroes.

Earlier, the Cartwrights who were on a five-day visit to the country paid a courtesy call on the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar. It was followed by a luncheon.

Also present were New Zealand High Commissioner Geoff Randal and Women Affairs and Family Development Minister Datuk Seri Sharizat Abdul Jalil who was the minister in attendance.
