TAIPING:
Speed-wise, policemen on bicycles may not be able to do much in a high speed chase with criminals.

However, they may be able to build a bond of  friendship with residents during their rounds, said L/Kpl Mazlina Ismail yesterday.

L/Kpl Mazlina came with her colleaques to accept 12 brand new bicycles donated by the public.

The handover of  the bicycles was held in conjunction with the launch of  the Zero Crime Zone, which was conducted, by Larut Matang and Selama OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Katran Askandar yesterday.

L/Kpl Mazlina, a mother of  four children based at the district police station here, will join a group of  fellow constables from the district, Simpang and Pokok Assam police stations to conduct their beat on bicycles.

"This is a change as throughout my 11-year career with the police, I have conducted my beat on foot and at times on motorcycles but never on a bicycles," she said.

The launch was also attended by Lion Club members, who distributed booklets on crime prevention to the public.

Speaking to reporters, ACP Ahmad Katran said police personnel would patrol a one-kilometre radius around their respective police stations.

"We hope this will enhance public cooperation as residents will get to know our personnel better," he said.
